What is cerebral palsy?
Cerebral Palsy is a disease of the central nervous system when one or more brain divisions are damaged, resulting in non-progressive disorders of motor and muscle activity, coordination of movements, vision, hearing, speech functions and mentality.
This disease is incurable. The possibility of cure of cerebral palsy is the main myth that should be dispelled not only for specialists working in the field of rehabilitation, but also for parents who should accept the diagnosis and believe that the situation can be improved with competent help of specialists and the child can be an active member of the society despite the health disorders.
Children with cerebral palsy may have different damages. There are those who absolutely own their body: go to school, run and jump, participate in competitions. At the same time there are such children with cerebral palsy, which can walk with certain limitations. And there are children who will never go on their own, and they even will never be able to sit down.
The task of parents is to understand and accept this point. They should understand that the condition of each children is different. Cerebral palsy has different degrees of severity. Since 1997, all the world's doctors have followed the system of classification of global motor functions. In Russia, it was formally accepted only in 2014. This is a scale of classifications of global motor functions that allows to give a child a functional class at the age of two and predict his development till he will be 18 years old.
If a child with cerebral palsy has managed to walk before 2 years old, he can be assigned 1 functional class, and a doctor will say for sure to the parents that a child by the age of 4-7 years old will learn to jump, go to school, will be able to do sports, but it can be, for example, incorrect settings of the limbs, awkwardness or discoordination, however his socialization will pass without any problems. If the child has not learned to walk by the age of 2 years, but he can get up at the pedestal, it will already be the second functional class, and the doctors will say to mother that the baby will likely go by the age of 4.
There are five functional classes actually. There are children who will never start walking by themselves. If a child can only sit by the age of 2 years, then he has very few chances to go on his own. But even this does not mean that you do not need to work with him. He has a lot of opportunities to go with the help of technical means of rehabilitation. That is, all these classifications were invented not to let the parents drop their hands, but to help them to understand the real situation and to know how to act and what can be done.
Now the doctors and families raising the children with cerebral palsy have many accessories, technical means that significantly expand the child's possibilities. Therefore, even the 3rd functional class is not a verdict. Unfortunately, there are children with 4 and 5 functional class, but in this case there are opportunities for development and correction.
What to do if a child is diagnosed with cerebral palsy?
Step 1. Visit the neurologist who is an expert in the disease. For example, the specialists from the list of "State Centers" (for receiving free services in these centers, it is necessary to take a referral from a local neurologist).
Step 2. Manage consultation with expert in rehabilitation to select the necessary rehabilitation course and technical means. Unfortunately, there are few doctors of this specialty in Russia (it is not included in the list of professions in the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation), but there are good specialists and every year the number of them increase.
We trust the rehabilitation specialists in the following Centers:
- Medical Center “Miloserdiye”
- Medical Center “Academy of Health”
- Rehabilitation Services "Physical Rehabilitation"
Step 3. To issue the necessary group of disability and to add everything necessary in the Individual Rehabilitation Plan
How to apply for a disability:
Step 4. Acquire/receive technical rehabilitation tools and equipment for exercises at home specially selected by your doctor and use them regularly
- Implementation of Individual Rehabilitation Plan
- Auxiliary means of rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation means for children
- Technical means of rehabilitation
- Verticalizers and other rehabilitation tools
Step 5. Find a physical training instructor or physical therapist near your house for regular classes with the child
Step 6. Practice physiotherapy exercises at home regularly, according to the recommendations of the specialists!

Resources for parents
The main thing is physical therapy and rehabilitation!
It will take a long essay to tell about all existing today therapies of cerebral palsy - this is massage, exercises, orthopedic equipment, Bobat Therapy, Voita Therapy, conductive method of Pete, surgical intervention, speech therapist and others. Therefore, it makes sense to talk not about each method separately, but about complex approaches to rehabilitation.
Parents often tell that during the massage the child cries and screams, the same thing happens during the Bobat Therapy sessions. But exercises through pain and scream will not lead to a stable improvement in the patient's condition. In Bobat Therapy, the physical therapist must include his patient into joint activity, the child must perform an action meaningly, which excludes a negative reaction from him. If there is negative reaction from a child, the therapist's actions are initially wrong and cannot lead to any improvements. Unfortunately, we have few competent physical therapists in our country.
